Good soil is essential to successful gardening. But if your garden soil isn’t ideal- or even fair- don’t despair. You can improve it.
Good garden soul- called loam has certain characteristics, all of which help plants grow vigorously. Loam has a nice feel to it. When you squeeze it lightly in your hand, it holds shape. But if you squeeze harder, it crumbles. Good loamy soil is so easy to work you can dig a hole in it with your bare hand.
Good soil contains good for microorganisms, plus all essential nutrients for plants. Because of its high content of decayed organic matter, loam retains those nutrients, as well as moisture.
Since most soils are not good soils in the beginning, gardeners improve them by following the basic steps outlined here.
